The Community Mutual Aid Fund has as its mission
• Promote entrepreneurship among the homeless community by providing start-up, seed and operations capital.
• Provide direct financial assistance to homeless people for survival itemslike perscriptions,bus pass, and eye glasses.
• Provide technical assistance to a select group of non-profits.
• Provide resource and development seed money so li fe savings programs such as the Berkeley Drop In Center can attain self-reliance and not be dependent on unstable governent funding.

There exists numerous homeless people who at times lack just a few dollars to improve their situation. Just $5 or $10 to pay for a prescription, bus fare to get to work and lifesaving medical appointments, or 50 cents to dry their laundry. Likewise many non-profits while providing some direct services lack the resources to meet the economic needs of their client. They frequently for example run out of bus passes. While the need is recognized; The petty cash fund is empty with limited resources to top it off again. The Community Mutual Aid Fund will correct these two situation. Its inception originates from former City of Berkeley Commissioner Mike Lee Homeless Commissioner a long time activist and former business owner. The fund will Short Term 1- 3 months Establish fund Begin issuing small one time grants of no more then $75.00 the cost of a monthly AC transit bus pass Establish process of accountability to donors through a regular method of contact. This contact shall take the form of, but is not limited to Facebook, Website, e-newsletter Medium Term 3 – 6 months Establish revolving fund to extend loans to non-profits who specifically serve homeless people. These funds shall be restricted to resource development. Establish joint fundraisers with non-profits who specifically serve homeless people. Fund will front all costs of the fundraiser in the anticipation of repayment from proceeds. Remain proceeds shall be divided equally 50 – 50 between the fund and the non-profit. Long Term 6 – 12 months Establish relationships with individual and corporate sponsors including small local businesses. Provide employment opportunities by implementing and establishing Homeless Workforce Initiative. Provide entrepreneurial opportunities through the provision of seed money and equity stake partnerships.
