Community Coalition Center 4 Community Organizing

Hi Friends and Colleagues,

As we continue efforts to advance racial justice and equity, I would like to invite you to join me in supporting an organization that's close to me. At the age of 15, I held my first job as a youth organizer in South LA. I had the opportunity to partner with fellow student leaders at Community Coalition in a campaign to fight for the equitable distribution of resources to refurbish and rebuild South LA's schools. And now, as a proud board member, I continue to see the daily movement-building work the organization does in partnership with Black and Brown resident leaders in South LA.

Founded in 1990 by Congressmember Karen Bass during the height of the crack-cocaine epidemic, Community Coalition (CoCo) has a 30-year track record of community-driven leadership. Over its 30 year history, CoCo has helped win game-changing policy measures in the fields of public safety, criminal justice reform and educational equity.

Recently, Community Coalition has played a critical role in providing mutual aid support for folks impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and in the fight to shift funds away from police budgets and into Black communities. As the organization looks at the next 30 years, it strives to intentionally expand its movement building and solidarity efforts beyond South LA by establishing a national school for organizers.  Provide a donation here.

In support of Community Coalition's 30 years of service to South LA, I have organized a fundraising campaign in hopes of raising the lucky number $7,000 to help launch Community Coalition's Center for Community Organizing. I invite you to support this effort by:

1.       Joining me for a Virtual "Brunch and Learn" on Sunday, August 30th, to Celebrate Community Coalition's 30th Anniversary from 12:30 – 1 pm. You'll hear more about Community Coalition, this movement moment as well as listen to leaders discuss how we can continue to support efforts for racial justice.  RSVP at [email redacted]. Flyer attached. Featured speakers include:

·       Dr. Pedro Noguera, Dean of the USC Rossier School of Education

·       Dr. Manuel Pastor, Distinguished Professor of Sociology and American Studies & Ethnicity, USC

·       Maisie Chin, Executive Director of CADRE

·       Dr. Mishelle Rodriguez, Psychologist, PhD, LP, Founder of Collaborative Changemakers Counseling

2.       Making a contribution to Community Coalition to help launch Community Coalition's Center for Community Organizing.

Thank you!

Best,
