Supporting the Family of Frank Downwind
Francis "Frank" Ray Ogichidaa Giiwiizence Downwind—Makwa Gaa-Nibaad, "Sleeping Bear" of the Kingfisher Clan—an enrolled member of the Red Lake Nation, made his journey to the spirit world on April 21, 2026. His passing has left a deep space in our community—one that reflects just how much he gave of himself to others.
Frank lived as an Ogichidaa—not through force, but through care, responsibility, humor, and presence. He showed up for people, especially our young people, offering guidance, structure, and belief when it was needed most. He was someone who stood beside you, made you laugh when things felt heavy, and reminded you of your strength.
He gave freely of his time, his energy, and his heart. Many of us carry stories of how Frank helped us, supported us, or simply made us feel seen. Now, in this time of loss, we are being called to show up for him and his family in that same way.
We are raising funds to support Frank’s family with funeral and burial expenses, including traditional services, travel to Redby, and honoring him in a good way. These costs come quickly and can be overwhelming, and we want to ensure his family can focus on grieving, healing, and being together without additional financial burden.
In our way, we take care of one another. We come together in times like this—with food, with prayers, with presence, and when we are able, with financial support.
If you are able to give, any contribution is deeply appreciated. If you are not able to give financially, we ask that you share this message, keep Frank and his family in your prayers, and continue to carry forward the love and teachings he gave to so many.
Frank showed us what it means to live in community. Let us honor him by coming together now.
Miigwech for your support, your prayers, and your love.
Giga-waabamigoo miinawaa — We will see you again.
