On July 5th, 2018, Naomi Combs (47) and Kathleen Combs (20), were spending some mother-daughter time together running a few quick errands before the holiday weekend.
On their way back home on Knik Goose Bay Road (KGB Road), they were stopped with signal on to turn left when a Dodge Durango slammed into the back of their fully stopped Jeep at 50 MPH. The impact killed the driver of the Durango instantly and he was pronounced deceased on the scene. Katie and Naomi had to be extracted from the wreckage as the force crumpled the car and jammed the doors.
Naomi and Katie were rushed to Matsu Regional Hospital where it quickly became apparent that Katie needed to be Medivac-ed to Anchorage due to the severity of her injuries. Naomi suffered 6 broken ribs while Katie sustained 11 fractures across her thoracic and lumbar spine as well as her pelvis.
Katie has undergone 14 hours of continuous surgery to repair the damage to her spinal column and pelvis sustained from the injury. After the surgery she was moved to the ICU where she remains until the inflammation lessens and she is able to breathe on her own. Naomi did not require surgery for her ribs and doctors believe they will heal on their own over time.
The Alaska State Troopers are still investigating the accident and driver, and no additional details have been released at this time.
