I am seeking assistance for my aunt Juleen Smith (Jolly) who is Jamaican but currently resides in the USA. She was diagnosed with ALS and is in need a ventilator as she is very ill. She is also diabetic and fell ill over a month ago after feeling weak. She checked into the Hartford Hospital Emergency Department and after numerous procedures and tests by various doctors, she was confirmed to have ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) which is a disease that affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord resulting in loss of muscle control. ALS affects the muscles that are needed to move, speak, eat and breathe and it is currently affecting her breathing.
Thus, I am seeking assistance with funding to help her with physiotherapy and to purchase a home ventilator. She does not have state insurance as she is not qualified. My family has been trying to get funding for her but we are not able to provide her with the required amount. Also, her children are not yet in the position to care for her and as they are 8 ,11 and 17 years of age, her eldest son is 24; he is trying his best to help her but it is not enough and it is hard for him to cope with seeing his mom in such a state. She has not seen her children since hospitalization as they are not allowed in the ICU. We are trying to purchase a home ventilator but it is expensive and she needs it as soon as possible as she is currently experiencing financial difficulties and staying in the hospital is costly. The home ventilator would enable her to go home and be with her family which would help a great deal as she is currently depressed and lonely. Therefore, we are kindly asking for any assistance that can be granted to help our family assist my aunt throughout this most difficult time; your kindness would be greatly appreciated.
