Colton Johnson-Brevard Music Camp
Donation protected
I am helping to raise money for a fine young man who performs with the Louisiana Youth Orchestra of which I am a big supporter and season underwriter. He has been accepted at the Summer Music Camp at Brevard Music Center in North Carolina which is an extraordinary accomplishment. Following is his story:
I am Colton Johnson from Walker Louisiana. I am the only person from Walker High School to ever be accepted to Brevard's music program
Out of a pool of applicants around the country, roughly 180 students are chosen to attend the high school division
Lots of preparation is involved in attending the camp; for six months before the audition, I worked diligently at the audition music nearly every evening
Two of the most influential teachers I have had, Larry Campbell[ Former BRSO Principal Trombonist] and Steve Menard [Current LSU Trombone Professor] both attended the program while in High School; this opportunity could lead to similar success in my career
Brevard Music Center's program runs from late June to early August; six weeks of intense study involving some of the best faculty selected from conservatories and music schools around the country
My Background:
I am currently an eleventh grade student at Walker High School. I began trombone in the sixth grade at Westside Junior High School. I am completing my fifth year with the Louisiana Youth Orchestra system. I have made my parish honor band for 5 years, the District IV Honor Band for 3 years, and LMEA All State Honor Band for 2 years. I am a member of the Livingston Parish Gifted and Talented Program for 5 years. I have lead the trombonists at my school to be much more competitive; 5 trombonists from my school made the district honor band because I have pushed them. I have also began a trombone quintet called The Obnoxious Noises that performs at churches, hospitals, and at productions around the Baton Rouge area. I have studied privately with Larry Campbell and with Steve Menard. I have done so while maintaining a 4.0 G.P.A. in Walker's High School's Honors Program. I also cantor in my church, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
Although the tuition is is $6300 I received a $2000 schlorship from Brevard leaving me with a $4300 balance due on June 1. Thank you for your help.
