Random Act of Kindness in Memory of Colten

On October 23rd, 2009, the Smith family experienced the tragic loss of their son, brother, grandson, nephew and cousin, Colten James, at the early age of 19 months due  to a dog attack. The loss of Colten will never be easy for his family and friends. Every year since this devastating event, the Smith family remembers Colten by making a positive difference in their community. From donating school supplies to youth in need, to anonymously paying for a child’s cake at Old Tyme Bakery, from the donation towards the purchase of the playground at their son’s school, to the annual toy drives in the Fall, the Smiths celebrate Colten by impacting lives of others. Last year, on Colten’s birthday, friends and family rallied together to make over 125 bears at Build-A-Bear, which were later distributed to Valley Children’s Hospital . This year, we are trying to pull off something really special.

This March will mark Colten’s 8th birthday.  As family tradition goes for their 8th birthday , the Smith family surprises their kids with a birthday trip to the happiest place on earth—Disneyland.  Both older Smith brothers went when they turned 8; this March would have been Colten’s chance.  In keeping with family tradition, let’s support the Smiths in raising funds to send a deserving family to Disneyland in honor of their sweet boy.

If all goes according to plan, the trip will include hotel accommodations, a character breakfast, hopper tickets, gas money, food allowance, and a Disney gift card, all to be given to a deserving family experiencing hardship. Therefore, all funds will be necessary to making this trip a magical experience.

The unexpected path this family has travelled hasn’t been easy. However, there is certainly something to be learned from the Smith’s experience; that despite the challenges of their path, they have chosen to brighten the lives of others through giving hearts and random acts of kindness.  Today marks the day Colten left us. As a community, let’s support the Smith family by sending a deserving family to Disneyland in memory of their son and brother, Colten James.

Thank you to the numerous family members, friends, and those moved by Colten’s story, for sharing in the many toy drives and heartfelt acts of kindness over the last 6 years.

Breann Smith, Colten’s mom, will work directly with the family to book accommodations for the trip. If the funds raised exceed the trip cost, the remainder of the contributions will be utilized in memory of  Colten.
