Hi All,
Over the years I have supported with several charity events and never done anything for a charity close to my heart.
So, this year my family and I have decided to do something for a charity very personal to me, Colostomy UK. As some of you may be aware I had surgery in October 2023 to have my colon removed leaving me with a permanent colostomy (STOMA) this was due to having IBS & Diverticulitis and I struggled from the age of 20 (now 44) not being able to leave the house, missing family holidays and losing time off work. I was always in pain and always taking medication, in and out of hospital multiple times and endless GP appointments.
This operation has been life changing for me and still comes with its daily challenges both physically and mentally, luckily for me I have a very close and very supportive family (I couldn’t have done this without there support) My stoma is called Barry, and he allows me to go out wherever I like, leave the house at the drop of a hat and have no anxiety about needing the toilet, this surgery has given me my life back!
I have noticed that not many people are aware of what a colostomy (STOMA) is and not all people who go through this life change have the support of friends & family. So, I want to raise awareness and help others who are not so fortunate as me.
SO, I have decided to walk Snowdon in October 2025 with my wife (Shelley) children (Mitchell & Katie and their partners Ellie & Dylan) Those who know me know that exercise is not my strongest point so this will be a huge challenge for me. Following this, we will be holding a coffee morning on 14th September 2025 (all welcome) 21, Water Street, Burntwood, Staffs, WS7 1AW
I am hoping these 2 events will raise funds to help other less fortunate than me.
Any donations would be appreciated and really make a difference to those who need the support Colostomy UK can offer!
My message to those who have just had surgery or due to have this surgery would be that they aren’t alone at all. There are many people who they can talk to including healthcare professionals like stoma nurses and counsellors, charities and of course there’s us other ostomates.
