Who We Are
An organization geared towards working with the youth to build community relationships among people of color while exploring identity, and creating art. Grounded on history, students will be introduced to concepts and history to engage in dialogue and use art mediums to develop their own narratives through collective engagement. All students will be able to gain leadership skills and play a critical role in community activism.
The Vision
We aim to empower all students in the Compton community by sharing the histories of people of color and introducing art as a form of communication.
What we need
Help support Color Compton’s Offices expenses. Currently, Color Compton’s rent is covered 100% by the CEO/Founder, Abigail Byrd-Lopez and her family. We are asking that the community come together and support Color Compton office expenses and continue the amazing work of providing creative programming for Compton youth.
Our Current Projects
We offer three art and history fellowships to youth year-round ; The Power of Your Narrative, Local Story, and In Bloom: Re-emerging Histories. Students receive access to hand-ons workshops, leadership skills, mentorship from guest artist and the opportunity to showcase their art in a gallery. In addition, Color Compton provides monthly art and community discussions open to all, as well as monthly book giveaways to youth.
In addition Color Compton Offices are open to community members and organizations to come in and utilize for meetings and work. Our services include free Wifi, coffee bar, snacks, reading library and private conference room.
