Hi, my name is Rebecca Romney and I am the volunteer librarian at the Colonia Juárez Grade School. It is a small bilingual school in northern Mexico, that is funded solely by tuition and the generosity of our townspeople (no government funding). The school serves PK-6th grade. There is no funding left for the library after teacher’s salaries and utilities. Tuition is a big sacrifice for many of the families down here. We need your help! Reading is such an essential part of learning, and these amazing kiddos are doing their best to read in English and Spanish. Most of our books are very old (the oldest I’ve found so far is 1931, but most are from the 70’s-90’s) and not what kids are interested in these days. Our Spanish fiction section is almost non-existent. The newer series that we do have, like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Harry Potter, Pete the Cat, Elephant and Piggie, and others get completely checked out every week during library time, and the copies are getting worn out from all the use. We check out books the old fashioned way- with checkout cards and a pencil. Our beanbags for story time are held together with duct tape. For heat in the winter, we’ve been using a small propane heater. Some shelves are breaking, and many books are held together with clear tape. Please consider helping by donating money or even a book (or two) from our Amazon wishlist!
With the donations we receive, we will be purchasing a new rug and stackable cushions for the kids, some new shelving, as many books as we can afford, some recognizable character stuffed animals, and if able, a library checkout system.
Please forward this on to other alumni, friends, family, and anyone who loves reading! Remember what the library meant to you as a child in elementary school. These kids get so excited about reading and and would love new books.
Thank you for your generosity! Every single dollar will be carefully used and can do so much good down here!
