This morning, I experienced something I will never forget.

My name is Darryl Popp. I am Canadian and currently visiting Medellín, Colombia.

I was sitting on the balcony of where I am staying, having my morning coffee, when the earthquake began. At first, I started recording because I honestly didn’t think my friends and family back home would believe what I was experiencing.

But as the shaking became stronger, it stopped being something surreal and became frighteningly real. I left the balcony because I no longer felt safe.

I am incredibly grateful that I am safe. But across Colombia, other people are dealing with the consequences of this earthquake, and I don’t want my experience here to simply become a video or a story that gets shared and then forgotten.

Colombia and its people have made an incredible impression on me. I have experienced their kindness, hospitality, culture and sense of community firsthand. Now I have an opportunity to use the attention surrounding my experience to try to give something back.

TURN ATTENTION INTO ACTION

My video of the earthquake has received media attention, and I have been asked to speak about my experience. Rather than making that attention about me, I want to use it to help the people and communities affected by this disaster.

I have no personal or family relationship with the individuals who may ultimately benefit from these funds. I am simply a Canadian visitor who happened to be here when the earthquake occurred and wants to help.

Whether someone contributes $5, $10, $100 or more, every contribution matters. If enough people come together, small acts of generosity can become something extraordinary.

I have set an ambitious fundraising goal because I believe we should think big. If millions of people simply gave a few dollars, imagine what we could accomplish together.

WHERE WILL THE MONEY GO?

This fundraiser is not for my personal benefit.

All funds raised through this campaign, minus any applicable GoFundMe transaction or payment-processing fees, will be directed to the Colombian Red Cross (Cruz Roja Colombiana) to support its humanitarian relief and recovery efforts in Colombia.

I will not take any personal fee, commission, salary or compensation from the donations. I will personally receive no financial benefit from this fundraiser.

The funds provided to the Colombian Red Cross are intended to support its humanitarian response, including emergency assistance, relief and recovery efforts, and other needs identified by the organization for affected people and communities.

Transparency is extremely important to me. I will provide updates regarding the transfer of funds so donors can see how their contributions are being directed.

Esta mañana viví algo que nunca olvidaré.

Mi nombre es Darryl Popp. Soy canadiense y actualmente estoy de visita en Medellín, Colombia.

Estaba tomando un café en el balcón del lugar donde me estoy hospedando cuando comenzó el terremoto. Empecé a grabar porque sinceramente pensé que mis amigos y familiares en Canadá no creerían lo que estaba viviendo.

Pero a medida que el movimiento se hizo más fuerte, dejó de ser algo surrealista y se convirtió en algo realmente aterrador. Salí del balcón porque ya no me sentía seguro.

Estoy profundamente agradecido de estar bien. Sin embargo, muchas personas y comunidades en Colombia están enfrentando las consecuencias de este terremoto. No quiero que mi experiencia simplemente se convierta en un video o una historia que se comparte y luego se olvida.

Colombia y su gente han dejado una enorme impresión en mí. Durante mi estadía he podido conocer de primera mano su amabilidad, hospitalidad, cultura y sentido de comunidad. Ahora tengo la oportunidad de utilizar la atención que ha recibido mi experiencia para devolver un poco de todo lo que Colombia me ha dado.

CONVIRTAMOS LA ATENCIÓN EN ACCIÓN

Mi video del terremoto ha recibido atención de los medios y me han pedido hablar sobre mi experiencia. No quiero que esa atención se trate de mí. Quiero aprovecharla para ayudar a las personas y comunidades afectadas.

No tengo ninguna relación personal o familiar con las personas que puedan beneficiarse de estos fondos. Simplemente soy un visitante canadiense que se encontraba en Colombia cuando ocurrió el terremoto y quiero ayudar.

Cada aporte cuenta, sin importar su tamaño. Si muchas personas aportamos un poco, juntos podemos lograr algo extraordinario.

He establecido una meta ambiciosa porque creo que debemos pensar en grande. Si millones de personas aportaran tan solo unos pocos dólares, imaginen lo que podríamos lograr juntos.

¿A DÓNDE IRÁ EL DINERO?

Esta campaña no es para mi beneficio personal.

Todos los fondos recaudados a través de esta campaña, menos las tarifas de transacción o procesamiento aplicables de GoFundMe, serán destinados a la Cruz Roja Colombiana para apoyar sus esfuerzos humanitarios de ayuda y recuperación en Colombia.

No recibiré honorarios, comisiones, salario ni ningún otro tipo de compensación proveniente de las donaciones. No obtendré ningún beneficio económico personal de esta campaña.

Los fondos entregados a la Cruz Roja Colombiana están destinados a apoyar su respuesta humanitaria, incluyendo asistencia de emergencia, esfuerzos de ayuda y recuperación, y otras necesidades que la organización identifique para las personas y comunidades afectadas.

La transparencia es extremadamente importante para mí. Publicaré actualizaciones sobre la transferencia de los fondos para que quienes hayan donado puedan saber cómo se están destinando sus aportes.
