Collene’s Battle
This Go Fund Me page has been created out of friendship and love to help people within our community to have the resources and the means to be together while they fight this battle. For those of you that do know them, as well those of you that don’t, this family is important to many and to the community that surrounds them. They are extremely proud, extremely strong and would never reach out personally for help. Below we share the scary story that they are going through.
Collene Skoven is the mother of three children, Grady (age 10), Avery (age 9) and Bailey (age 4). Collene is married to Desmond (Des) Kleinschroth and they live on a family farm just off the Oras road outside of Rocky Mountain House. Desmond is a teacher, well known to many at Pioneer School and very active within Rocky Minor Hockey as well as other associations. Collene is known by all as a mother who takes on many responsibilities such as tending to the family farm, caring for the children and most of all as being extremely close to her family whom live nearby.
In March of this year, Collene noticed a swollen gland in the side of her neck after having a tooth extracted. She was sent for an ultrasound on April 1st at which time they found a blood clot and a nugget sized mass on her thyroid. Three short days later (April 4th ) Collene was unable to swallow any liquid including choking on even her own saliva. Immediately she was sent for a CT Scan to determine the cause of the rapidly progressing blockage. Doctors completed a biopsy on April 12th, along with attempting to insert a feeding tube (on April 16th). On April 19th during a surgical biopsy the feeding tube was successfully placed. Results of the testing came back conclusive a couple days later that Collene was battling a very aggressive, rare disease called “Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer”.
Everything for this family has happened very quickly. As Collene’s condition progressed, it meant she has been unable to return home other than for a couple brief stays. Although the family and doctors are hopeful to move Collene closer to home for the upcoming stages, at this time they continue to keep her as comfortable as possible at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton. Over the last couple of weeks Collene’s condition has significantly become more unstable. After a bad reaction to chemo, a tracheotomy was necessary through under an emergency procedure. Each day spent going forward will be precious for the family as the future is very unknown at this time.
We are reaching out to our communities to help us create a financial cushion for them to cover such things as travel expenses, followup medical bills, meals, childcare and to help with living expenses to keep up their home while they are away. Without any way to communicate to friends and family, or to host a proper fundraiser, every little bit of support we are able to provide will be so very important in helping with the resources they will need. Please like, share and invite others to help us reach our target of $20,000. Every little bit helps to ease the burden and this family is very grateful for all the support they have been given and continue to receive.
