College Support for Xaviera Newman
Donation protected
My name is Xaviera Newman and have Type 1 diabetes. I am a sophomore at William Jessup University as a Liberal Studies major focusing in American Sign Language Studies (ASLS). I am hoping to be a social worker specializing in work with the Deaf community.
Each year I receive several scholarships from Jessup and my local church Christian Church of Santa Clara. I also receive funding through FASFA and take out student loans and I am still short $9000 each semester.
My parents have spent the last year trying to come up with the additional $18000 for the year by each working a second job, leaving next to no time for my younger brother at the end of the day.
My mom works 40 hours a week as a preschool teacher for the local school district. She works 16 extra hours a week as a grocery store merchandiser. My dad works 40 hours a week as a truck driver and an extra 15 hours a week as a car parts delivery driver. All of the money they get from their extra work goes straight to my college tuition.
I am a part of the universities touring choir and orchestra along with the smaller orchestra that performs just on campus. I also am an active member of the ASL (American Sign Language) club on campus. I help with many of the ASL events on campus hosted throughout the academic year.
In addition to my studies I am a babysitter for a local military family and am working to become a respite worker with a Deaf woman nearby.
My family and I are hoping to have the money by the start of the 2019 fall semester. I appreciate whatever you are able to give and would love whatever support you can provide. Thank you.
