College Fund for Kathy

Meet Kathy, a young 18 year old staying in Newark. She is a senior in the Newark Memorial High school, with a dream of being prefessionaly succeesful in her future.

I had the pleasure of  mentoring Kathy for the last few years. She used to come to my house occasionally with her mom when her mom babysat my children. While her mom worked,  she would study.  At that time, I started mentoring her.
She comes from a low-income Latino community where long term education is a luxury that most families can not afford. Her parents are very hard working and supportive but lack the education background needed to guide her for her career goals. Many young adults in that situation have to make compromises when it comes to education, no matter what their goals in life are. This is a vicious cycle for most people, with her socio-economic background, to come out of. But Kathy proved the stereotype wrong. Her background didn't stop her from taking the difficult courses or programs in  school that could have been intimidating for a lot students in her position. She dilligently worked towards her goal of a STEM career. She worked hard for a good SAT score and she has been accepted to four schools! 

Kathy has decided to commit to San Jose State University for the MIS program. While this is an exciting time for her, she is also worried that her education in college will add to her parents financial struggles even more, and maybe even compromise the education of her younger siblings.

So my friends, I am reaching out to you all to lend a helping hand to Kathy to fulfill her dreams of higher education. This funding will definitely alleviate a lot of the hardships that her family might have to face when she attends college. If we can raise enough funds to give her a head start in her first year in college, she will be extrememly thankful.
