College Confectionista

My name is Anamaría Morales, and I am on a mission to “bake my way through college one cheesecake at a time!” I recently graduated from Santa Rosa Junior College, and will be attending the University of California Berkeley in the Fall as a first-generation college student. While at Cal I will be majoring in Business and Rhetoric.

Coming from a low-income Latino family with teenage parents, I needed to think creatively about how I was going to fund my higher education. Consequently, I decided to combine my love for entrepreneurship and baking to create my own cheesecake fundraiser, College Confectionista. I launched College Confectionista at 18-years-old during my senior year at El Molino High School.

Since then, my story has been shared across the Sonoma County community, and throughout the United States! My hope is that this GoFundMe page will provide a platform for those who want to support me and my efforts, but are not locally located to order a cheesecake.

One of my many goals is to transform College Confectionista into a non-profit organization that provides  mentorship and aid to low-income Latinas seeking to be first-generation college students. Imagine Girl Scout cookies gone cheesecake, where other young women can sell College Confectionista cheesecakes to their community with a percentage of sales set aside for scholarships.

Another goal of mine is to expand College Confectionista into  grocery stores across the nation who believe in supporting local farmers, products, and businesses such as Oliver's, and Whole Foods. My cheesecakes change each month focusing on holiday flavors and the seasonal produce of Sonoma County. I believe in supporting other local businesses, so I use organic ingredients and farm fresh eggs right here from our beautiful home.

Navigating the university system as a student with parental support is complex enough. FAFSA, finding tax information from years ago, paying for all those AP tests, and then again to send out scores and transcripts...scholarship opportunities...on, and on, and on. I didn’t have siblings or family members who have “been there, done that.” Finding a way to attend college without financial resources is an absolute a test of ingenuity. It shouldn’t be this hard. There needs to be BETTER resources for first-generation students. Programs, counselors, mentors, BOOKS!

That is why one of my goals is to write and publish my book titled Undeclared - A Universal Guide Through University. My book would be geared towards women who are high school seniors, community college transfers, and continuing college students. The book would combine self-help, spirituality, leadership, and guidance to discovering one’s purpose while deciding the right major in a demanding 21st century. I wish to travel the nation sharing my book, my story, encourage minority women to rise up, overcome their socioeconomic challenges, speak their minds, and give back to their community. As a young student without financial means or encouragement to attend college from my family, I wish this book would have been available to me, as an enlightening guide through my emotional, mental, and academic hardships on the path to university.

In order to reach my aspirations and achieve both my educational and life goals I need all the positive support I can get!

From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Truly.
