How can we let rage fuel us? How can we let go of the notion that women need to always be polite, cautious, and gentle as they try to change the world?
Right now the world makes us angry. Really angry. But we won’t lay down and take it. We will continue creating joy and community the way we do best: through art.
This is at the heart of Collective Rage: A Play in 5 Betties. This absurdist dark comedy by Jen Silverman explores the concepts of identity, self-discovery, love and rage through the relationships of five characters - all named Betty. We delve into the varied experiences of being queer and female-bodied, how the intersection of gender, race, and sexuality uniquely shapes us, and humanity and art bring us together. In the playwright's words, it is about five people "in desperate pursuit of happiness, in the face of an almost unbearable loneliness." That is what we wish for audiences to take away; we need to fight for our happiness. We need to grit our teeth and bloody our knuckles. But we aren’t alone. We aren’t angry in isolation. There is power in our Collective Rage.
The production will go up the first weekend in May at the NuBox theatre in Hell’s Kitchen. Every contribution to bring it to life is greatly appreciated.
