"We have known for a while now that our little man has something called a sacrococcygeal teratoma. This is a little cyst that is located at the base of his spine. So far it is not affecting him at all. However, he will need to be closely monitored to make sure that the cyst is not impacting blood flow to his brain, heart, or kidneys. Once he is born and considered stable, he will have to have surgery to remove the teratoma. We have been told that while the surgery is complex, the outcomes are typically very successful without any long-term issues. Because of this, we will have to remain in Iowa City until I deliver. The doctors and surgeons have decided that it would not be safe for me to deliver somewhere where they could not do the surgery for his teratoma. However, since I am not in active labor and haven’t had any signs of labor in 3 weeks, I will be getting discharged from the hospital. So, for the next roughly 13 weeks (hopefully) we will be living in either an Air BNB or a hotel here in Iowa City. Definitely not the summer plans we had, but we are thankful for such amazing doctors and a God that is holding our little guy in His hands. "
