I would like you to meet a sweet little fighter named Cole Roland Gordon Young
Born September 2, 2015, at 8.28am, weighing 6lbs 8oz.
Proud parents are Callie Williams and DJ Young, and an extremely proud big brother, Carter.
(Side note: DJ is not Carter's biological father, he has always been there for both Callie and Carter, and would never treat Carter as anything less then his own son!)
We like to say that Cole had become a miracle baby for Callie and DJ, in July 2014 Callie found out she was pregnant, everyone was so excited, especially Carter. This was the beginning of a new journey for this family. Just when they thought all was good Callie suffered a miscarriage, causing heartache, and upset. Carter was so upset to find out he was no longer going to be a big brother.
Christmas 2014 turned into an amazing day, when Callie surprised DJ and Carter with news she was pregnant. Excitement all around!! Being extra cautious, not even announcing the pregnancy until they were absolutely sure things were moving along just right. And then a Journey begins, this time everything was perfect..... everyday Callie's bump grew, and everyday Carter would ask when his new baby sister or brother would arrive.
Fast forward to Sept 2, 2015, YAY!! Baby brother Cole is here! What a beautiful baby boy he is!
No heart beat.. that was the longest 7 minutes of Callie and DJ's lives! Thankfully doctors managed to resuscitate Cole, and all seemed well. A few hours later Cole turned blue in Callie’s arms, and immediately needed Oxygen, and again a 2nd time this happened.
Cole was transferred to Sick Kids Hospital Sept 3rd.
A battery of tests, scans, MRI's, blood tests, skin biopsy's, and more wires than we could ever imagine hooked up to such a tiny body . Each test result came back “normal”, leaving Callie and DJ feeling more and more lost, with no answers, and scared beyond any words can describe.
What the doctor's have discovered this past week is changing everything, Cole has been diagnosed with a RARE and UNTREATABLE Metabolic Disease. And with more tests ahead, it can be weeks or months (if we have that time) before they can determine exactly what is happening to Baby Cole.
Cole has suffered numerous seizures, losing oxygen and stopped breathing more times than we can count now. He is no longer physically able to eat from a bottle because his chords in his throat are so swollen. He also suffers from reflux really bad, which is the reason his throat is so swollen.
On Sept 23rd, the doctors sat DJ and Callie down and told them that Cole's heart has been seriously damaged, and affected by this disease and is larger then it should be. They have been told to spend as much time with Cole as they possibly can, and every moment is extremely precious, they do not believe he has too much longer to live (maybe weeks, maybe only a couple months).
Callie and DJ are spending as many waking moments with Cole as they can. Big Brother Carter is struggling to grasp the extent of this situation, only understanding his new baby brother is very sick. It is heartbreaking to see a family have to endure such pain at a time when they were so hopeful for this new journey to begin as a complete family!
Positivity is hard to keep on a daily basis, with worries of Cole, and Carter, and of course the bills don't stop coming in. DJ works for Link-Line, (he is used to working out of town for 8 months of the year) he has been unable to work since the birth of Cole.
Callie works for Kerry's Place (supporting Autistic adults to give a qood quality of life) she is currently on her MAT leave.
DJ has started selling many of the extra items they have at home in order to help offset the lack of income they have right now. We all know the struggles to keep on top of everything even when we are receiving a regular pay check.
DJ and Callie are currently staying at The Ronald McDonald house when they are not at the hospital.
Callie's mom has taken some time off work to help them with Carter, he just started school this year, he is struggling tremendously, because all he wants is to be a Big Brother , and begs to be with his mom and DJ daily. When he does get a rare glimpse of time to see his baby brother, he sings to him in hopes of making him all better.
Everyday is hard for them, they still don't have a 100% diagnosis, so with that, Callie and DJ are not accepting that they don't have much time with Cole. The biggest struggles they face, are not knowing if Cole will ever come home with them one day.
Many friends and family have offered support in numerous ways for this bright young family, but the reality of this situation is far bigger then we can ever begin to see. With everyday, every minute worries about Cole, and Carter, we can't forget the daily struggles with keeping finances in order, daily expenses for all of them, and the expenses they may have in the future to provide for Cole.
The reality of this disease is harsh, and although doctors can not determine exactly what Metabolic disease Cole has, we have hopes that with modern medicine, there is the slim chance it will be something that can managed and live many years with.
As Callie and DJ wake up everyday, and do everything they can to make this sweet little fighter feel comfortable and loved, and to just see a smile and enjoy every single moment with Cole as if it might be the last, they also try as hard as possible not to dwell on the bad moments, and not let that consume them ( and we all know that can not be easy for them!!)
All the while having to remain as positive as possible, try to understand as mush as possible about what is happening to their son, find comfort in other parents, family members, and friends from afar, remembering all the while that MIRACLES do happen.
What we are all hoping for is that Cole will improve everyday, and as much as we must remain positive, we must all remain realistic. As we all try to remain as proactive as possible, we must not dwell on the unknown or the harshness, lets put all our energy and good vibes towards this beautiful family and help them continue this journey.
Please feel free to comment, and please know that your donation in any amount is accepted with the greatest amount of gratitude Callie and DJ can give. We as friends have decided to start this account for Cole and his family in hopes of raising money to help them in any way they need financially as they descend into the unknown days ahead.
Callie and DJ would appreciate any offer of support, and knowledge you may have to offer. I give my thanks in advance to each and every one of you who is willing to share this journey into the unknown with us.
Please keep Cole in your hearts, he is a fighter, he has proven that to Mommy, Daddy and Big Brother Carter for the last few weeks!! And that helps everyone believe that he is not giving up! He absolutely is a true Miracle!!
Lots of Love, hugs and kisses for Callie, DJ, Carter and Cole.
