Hello Family and Friends,
It all started on Monday before Christmas (12/19/2016) when I took our thirteen-year-old son Cole to an eye appointment. He had been having trouble seeing far away and had a few headaches. During this eye appointment, they saw some swelling in his eyes so they did a CT scan of his eyes which showed he had abnormal swelling behind his eyes. They wanted Cole to have an MRI which was done the next day at New Ulm Medical Center and we waited for the results.
This is when everything changed for us. Cole had a tumor in his brain.
Cole was taken to Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis by ambulance that night. We had learned that there was extra fluid built up which caused extra pressure on the brain and his eyes. He had his first surgery Wednesday night to put a tube on the top of his head to drain out the fluid and to release the pressure in his brain. The surgery went very well and Cole did great!
Cole still had to have surgery to remove the tumor, but another MRI and other tests had to be completed first. The MRI revealed that he had another very small spot in his brain. Thankfully, the spine looked good as it had not spread there. This was another hard day for us.
Cole had his second surgery which went great! The doctors removed all of the larger tumor successfully! Cole remained at Children’s Hospital to heal, rest and recover from surgery, while the doctors ran tests on the tumor to find out what kind it is and to determine his course of treatment for the other smaller tumor. The test results revealed that Cole had a cancerous tumor called medulloblastoma. He had one more surgery to put the port in for his treatments before going home. Cole was discharged from the hospital on January 13th and we got to go home, but this has only been the beginning of this journey. Cole will need radiation and chemo in the following months.
We have received tremendous support from all our family and friends. We thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for all the prayers, support, and generosity we have received thus far. As we begin the next phase of this journey and Cole begins radiation for the smaller tumor, we will continue to need your support. Any gifts received will be used to help cover Cole’s medical bills and other costs endured during his journey with brain cancer. We thank you so much for helping us through this and I want you all to know how much we appreciate everything you are all doing for us! You have no idea how much this means to my entire family. It has touched us deeply and we feel YOUR love and support! We love you all!
We still have a long journey ahead of us, but I am extremely PROUD of my son. Cole has been so STRONG through all of this. He simply is an AMAZING kid! We LOVE Cole so much and know everyone loves him too! He WILL continue to fight through this and is strong enough to BEAT this! GOD and some special ANGELS will be by his side and give him the STRENGTH, the COURAGE, and the FAITH to keep fighting and help him heal through this process. Please keep Cole in your prayers and send him the strength to get through this very unexpected journey. God Bless Everyone!
