Have you ever met someone that is a genuine, selfless person with no effort to be so whatsoever? Someone that will do all they can for another human being whether it burns them out or not and still not murmur or complain? Well, my name is NeAisha, for those of you that don't know me, and I know someone that embodies all of these rare characteristics, and I'd like to share her story.
Coleen Cummings is this person. Coleen and I have worked together for about three years now as nurses at West Calcasieu Cameron hospital, and it has been my pleasure. She has had a few rough patches in life, but nothing has changed the core of who she is. Right now, she needs financial assistance, and I'm coming on her behalf, asking that you find it in your heart to bless someone that has blessed so many others.
On November 14, 2010, her life changed forever. She received a phone call that her son, TJ, her healthy 19-year-old son, was dead. Every mother's worse nightmare is to pick up the phone and find out that the child you carried for nine months, and nurtured is no longer here on earth. This period was tough for her, but she picked up the pieces to continue raising her 11-year-old daughter, Gabby. She has had some good and bad days, but her love and care for other people never changes.
Fast forward to February 12, 2012, and her life was turned upside down once again. She was in a tragic accident on a side by side where the roll bar fell on her lower right leg. She had a compound fracture of her right tibia and fibula (both bones were broken and sticking out of her skin). She went through many surgeries and, at one point, was separated from her 13-year-old daughter for seven weeks in LTACH (long term acute care hospital) while receiving antibiotics and extensive wound care. Over the next 1.5 years, she battled with infection after infection, including osteomyelitis (infection in the bone) and surgery after surgery, until finally, in June of 2013, she was able to return to work.
So now, present day, here we are. In November of 2019, she noticed some drainage from her right tibia. She had an MRI done that showed a large pocket of fluid indicative of osteomyelitis. January 8, 2020, the day of surgery, required a rod replacement with the removal of the tibia bone, using cement spacers to replace the bone.
So here is where we need your help. The recovery process for this is going to be quite extensive; she is currently in LTACH getting antibiotics for a minimum of 6 weeks and will be out of work for a minimum of 6 months. She is a single parent that is the sole provider in her household, with no short or long term disability, one week of insurance coverage left and not nearly enough sick time or PTO to cover the time she will be off work.
Coleen is a beautiful spirit, and I wish you all had the privilege of knowing her personally. We all know that life never stops regardless of the situation and can even be cruel. Just because she had surgery and will be out of commission for awhile does not mean that the bills are on pause. She has a long road of recovery and as her friend I am asking that we come together and do what we can to support someone that would do that and more for you. Any little bit will help!
