My name is Nate Sheets, and I am a behavior consultant, trainer, and public speaker who specializes in Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD's), the #1 cause of developmental disabilities in the world. FASD is estimated to impact 5% of the US population.
Due to the lack of support in our society and ongoing stress, many people with FASD's engage in challenging or risky behaviors. While many of their behaviors seem intentional, these difficulties ultimately come from how their brain works in a world that demands fast processing speed, immediate compliance, and complex abstract thought. In other words, people with FASD's—5% of the population—are continually being misunderstood by their teachers, their friends, and even their families.
For the past several years, I've developed Cognitive Supports™, a model to re-interpret behaviors and skills-building based upon what we know about the brain and how it is impacted by an FASD. You can watch an introduction to the model in the video below (the explanation starts around 1:50).
"Essential FASD Supports" will help parents and professionals understand the cognitive skill demands of everyday situations and provide practical supports based upon those skills. This allows us to accept our child for who they are now, remove stress, and start to build skills while putting tools in place to encourage improvement.
I have had the pleasure of meeting many of you while speaking or online through my Youtube channel and Facebook page. I am asking for the FASD community's support (financial and emotional!) in creating a book that I hope will be the go-to book in introducing your family members, therapists, teachers, and communities to a different way of thinking about your child's behaviors and using their strengths to move forward!
Even more, I hope that this book changes your thinking in a way that helps you connect with your child more. I believe that every person with an FASD has the potential to learn and improve, and that families have every reason for hope if we can get supports in place and reduce stress. This book will give you the essential supports that people with FASD need in order to start seeing improvements.
The FASD journey is scary when you feel like you're alone, but I work with so many families who are in the same, stressful situation that you are. You are not alone, and it is time for our communities and governments to recognize the effect the lack of supports and services has on people with FASD's and on their families. I hope this book will be a step in making practical change possible in all systems and families.
I appreciate all donations to help me set up publishing costs, to market the book, and to allow me to devote several days to finalize the book so that it is as good as I can possibly make it! Patrons who give at least $20 per month will automatically receive a book, so that is another way to pre-order it if you'd like to provide monthly support to my work.
Fund $20 USD and receive 1 book! (the book will retail for $25.95 USD)
Fund $50 USD and receive 3 books!
Fund $100 USD and receive 5 books + 1 book donated to a family who cannot pay
Once you have donated, please provide your shipping address by filling out the form at https://forms.gle/gM75yGS77JKKBLHr6 . Please don't forget! :)
***Non-US supporters: I am still figuring out the logistics of getting books sent to you in a way that does not cost more than your donation! Your books may arrive later than in the US as I make this happen--hopefully no later than November!
