Jonas’ family and partner, Jocelyn McElroy, are creating a memorial space for Jonas Fricke in the Putney graveyard near where he lived and attended meeting as a boy. This space is meant to offer a place for friends, family, and community members to remember the love, kindness, and inspiration Jonas brought into their lives, as well as provide a peaceful haven to rest and restore themselves.
Jonas was known for building and nurturing community, creating spaces where diversity could thrive and people felt safe. He brought people together for grieving, creativity, political expression, and music, always encouraging others to express themselves and find comfort in each other’s company. We hope that this memorial space will continue to offer the same sense of belonging and inspiration that Jonas gave so freely in life.
The stone bench where people can sit by the headstone will have the inscription of the song from the Incredible String Band:
“May the long-time sunshine upon you,
All love surrounds you,
And the pure light within you,
Guide your way on.”
The memorial stone will feature a replica of a drawing Jonas made years ago—a winding road leading into the sunset—along with his name, the dates he lived, and the words “Dearly Loved.” On the back, the stone will display the nickname children gave him, “JoBo,” and 18 of the 40 humorous and heartfelt titles given by his clown teacher, Netty Lu Lane. Titles like Captain of the Friend Ship, Poet of Possibility, King of Kindness, and Seeker of Silly capture the unique spirit and joy Jonas brought to his life.
