Our baby is a fighter, a warrior and a survivor. He's with us today againts all odds

On the day he was born, he had to stay at the hospital after being initially diagnosed with hypoglycemia. After that first diagnosis, we were worried but still had to wait at home; no long after , we received a phone call to inform us that he had to be plugged in to a continuous flow of oxygen unit. At the time the new diagnosis now was pneumonia and a bacterial infection that was affecting his lungs and kidneys. Diego was in very bad shape; he couldn’t eat, nor pee on his own.

Due to his medical condition, I didn’t have the chance to breastfeed him. So, They put a gastric tube through his nose in order to provide him with food. He also was started on dialysis, so for that, they had intervened him and put a shunt in. Even after all of those terrible things happened, we were still not done with the horrible surprises, there was more to come. Diego had Multiple Organ Failures and also a Neonatal Intracranial Hemorrhage. They found out there was bleeding in his brain, so he needed to get back into the OR. The infection was so severe and his immune system was very weak, which lead to his white blood cell count being very low by that time. Due to the low white blood cell count he was in need of constant blood, platelet and plasma transfusions. It was also very difficult to get donors.

Giving his condition, his pediatrician was very secretive about Diego’s health. He gave us no information, or updates our baby’s progress.

So, it was shocking to find out that Diego had only 1% chance of surviving and get through that nightmare. Which also meant 1% chance of being with me and his father. Those were devastating news indeed for both of our families.

As the days went by, Diego got better little by little. But he was still in a fragile and delicate state. The chances of him eating anything by himself were almost nule, so the decision of surgery to put in a gastrostomy feeding tube was hard and painful.

We couldn’t hold our baby in our arms due to all the tubes and machines he was plugged into.

The whole thing was heart breaking for us but something happened along the way that gave us hope. His sucking reflex was back so this meant he cold maybe start eating on his own. Also his blood test were getting better and better. Lung infection cleared so that meant the oxygen machine could be removed, to make things even better they informed us, dyalisis was no longer needed.

So, after 32 hard and painful days he was almost in the clear. he just needed to stay for observation for a bit more. Things were looking brighter for him.

Finally, on day 46th Diego was able to leave the hospital. We could smile again and more importantly we were able to hug our child.

Diego was scheduled for many rehabilitation sessions and tests to assess the damage caused by his previous conditions.

During one of many appointments and test they found out that his hearing had need affected and he wasn’t able to hear!

This means he can’t hear me say I love him, and that he is the most beautiful and meaningful thing in my life.

So, here we are….Diego needs surgery again to put in some implants that will aid him with his hearing. Unfortunately my medical insurance does not cover cochlear implants nor the surgery. The total cost will be $75k USCY to cover the implants and all related expenses. My husband and I ask for your help, from the bottom of our hearts since we cannot afford it. But are whiling to do whatever is necessary to help our child get his hearing.
