For my birthday last year, I ran my first half marathon. Purely because there had been nothing else to do in a locked down Melbourne, apart from run the roads.
This October, for my birthday I’m going to run my first marathon to raise vital funds for my brother’s girlfriend, Tara McCaughan.
My brother Stephen and his girlfriend Tara were living their best lives in Vancouver, Canada when Tara was diagnosed with a stage 4 brain tumour in March 2020. This is a very rare and incurable brain tumour and Tara was told she only has a 50% chance of surviving past two years.
To date, Tara has been through brain surgery, 30 sessions of radiotherapy together with chemotherapy and followed by a further 6 months of chemotherapy, all during a world wide pandemic.
Tara now faces into MRIs every 3 to 6 months as this specific grade of tumour (glioblastoma) is so aggressive and unpredictable. These regular MRIs will be part and parcel of Tara and Stephens’ lives, restricting their ability to plan, travel and do the things that we may take for granted.
Tara has taught us all to celebrate the miracle of our life, health and family and not to stress the small stuff. Tara epitomises the importance of our health and well being through her constant positivity and outlook on life. Go check out her Instagram page - @lifebehindtherainbow
Time is a gift and growing old is a luxury which is denied to many. Please make sure you are celebrating every moment.
Here’s to running the roads and when the training gets tough I’ll always remind myself it’s nothing compared to what both Tara and Stephen have endured over the past year.
Given Tara’s prognosis, the money raised will aim to support Tara fund future alternative treatments and ultimately help in getting a step closer to finding a cure.
All donations, big or small are greatly appreciated.
