Hello everyone. My name is Karyn Smith and my life is dedicated to making the world a more delicious place!
Currently I am asking friends, family and foodies far and wide to “Go Fund Me”, raising the money needed to open the Coastal Cafe, making Sanderling Waldorf School and North County San Diego the most delicious place coast to coast!
The funds raised here, will be used for the start up for the Coastal Cafe, specializing in gourmet coastal cuisine and serving as the home kitchen for the Sanderling Organic Hot Lunch Program. While there are countless details in licensing, insuring and a whole circus of other hoops to jump through - there is also the fun stuff! I plan to buy a teardrop style trailer, which will serve as a mobile kitchen. After talking to a friend who is a master carpenter and designer, we are laying down the ground work and plans for gutting, designing and suiting the trailer to be the most charming little mobile kitchen on four wheels. All of the equipment will have to be purchased and installed and people will need to be hired before setting sail. We can use the mobile kitchen not only for lunches, but for on sight cooking with students, events and so much more. Marko and I have already talked about how sweet it would be to work with third graders as they are studying farming, gardening, cooking and measurement, by having them prepare a “garden to table” event. Eighth graders can get their kitchen chemistry on and brew up sourdough pizza crust to sell as a class fundraising project. There are limitless possibilities including - beach dinners to go, catering, and special events- offering delicious, healthy, low environmental impact food up and down the coast of Southern California. The revenue opportunities are boundless.
My passion is to serve my friends, family and community amazing food. I love how food brings people together. I love going to markets, talking and laughing with people - getting inspired by the season’s best, bringing it home, making a meal and sharing that meal. The past 20 years of my life have been devoted to the culinary arts. After becoming a mother, my sweet Gabriel was my new inspiration, taking my craft to new meaningful levels. Wanting only the very best for him, I embarked on a path of study and research, delving deep into the art of cuisine and nutrition. The fruits of those labors were harvested and served to children and families of my local community in Michigan, seeding into what is now the culmination of my career. Three years ago my family and I relocated to Encinitas, California, a place I am grateful to call home. It is here that the Coastal Cafe was born and will be the platform for my newest endeavor, which will bring me back to the hearth, doing what I love best.

About me: For my friends back in Michigan, I was best known for creating and running an organic, farm to school inspired hot lunch program at Oakland Steiner Waldorf School. In Southern California, you may know me as the “soup lady” - making organic soups for our school community. This program has been quite successful and has set me up for the next big step. As we eagerly plan for our new school sight, one that will be a Waldorf dream come true, designed with the highest of ecological standards in mind, plenty of nature and aesthetic beauty, I see how an organic hot lunch program will add to and compliment our adorable school, putting Sanderling on the map! I see the children growing lettuces and edible flowers for their salads, harvesting onions and root vegetables for seasonal soups and filling their bellies with gorgeous, nutritious food of the highest integrity and quality. I see mothers and fathers sleeping in an extra hour, or sipping on their morning cup of joe, knowing, at school a healthy and nourishing lunch will be provided.

I make and create food of the highest standard and integrity, without compromising taste and flavor. Simple foods taste so good when they are in season, locally sourced and prepared properly - coaxing out their inner beauty and dazzling our palates. I am dedicated to keeping my carbon footprint light, using environmentally sustainable products, sourcing from local companies whenever possible, growing my own food and building relationships with local farmers. Eating seasonally and locally naturally gives us a variety of foods and nutrients - which is the simplest and most natural way to fortify our health. Nature is smart, giving us what we need throughout the seasons, supplying us with the perfect variety of plants and herbs to remedy and strengthen our bodies. This is NEW-trition. Reclaiming the traditions of sustainable cultures and bringing them to our modern times. I source from local farmers, bakers and makers. This is coastal cuisine at its finest.
I believe children should have the best foods available. I love my community, I love where I live and love what I do. This GOFUNDME will give me the financial boost to create the very best business in the very best way I know how - bringing my vision and dream into form. My heart flutters at the thought of this coming to fruition. This fiery, laser beam of focus and intention has me jumping out of bed in the morning and motivated to be doing things I never thought possible. I am ready to bring my life’s work to the table and share what I have to offer with not only Sanderling, but all of North County San Diego and the countless others world wide through blogging, writing and cooking.

There are several other projects and irons on the fire just waiting for their turn. I have no doubt that starting this business will be the foundation stone of my career. I have mentors and help in the wings, giving me priceless advice, sharing their wisdom coming from years of their experience.
My heart radiates gratitude for you taking the time to read this letter of request. I send my deepest thanks for any and all you are willing to contribute to this fund. Thank you for believing in me, trusting in the not yet seen of what is sure to be an extraordinary business.
Much love,
Karyn
