What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the name James (Coach Jimmy) Goachee?
For many folks across Alachua County, it’s the thought of a bearded man in a team uniform serving as coach and number one cheerleader, running the concession stand, lining the fields, giving them their sporting equipment, or the man that is doing anything he could to help improve the life of kids in the community.
Through out the last year, Jimmy has been battling extensive back, hip and leg pain that was written off by numerous physicians as being chronic back pain that needed rehab, rest, and him taking better care of himself. On March 5th, after days of pain that left him unable to get out of bed, a Dr finally said enough is enough and ordered an MRI to evaluate the source of his discomfort. On March 6th, he received the news that the source of pain was a large extensive tumor of the spine that extends into his hips, likely caused by an advanced cancer with metastasis. The next few days were a whirlwind of additional tests and meetings with multiple physicians trying to determine a diagnosis. The last two months have been a series of biopsies, scans and continued pain and suffering as the oncologists struggled to determine the type of cancer that caused such an extensive tumor.
On May 17th, 2019, the man who has spent two thirds of his life giving back, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of B-cell Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma with metastasis. Despite being in excruciating pain daily, Jimmy has continued to serve his customers, been there for those in need, and has done everything in his power to try to and maintain as much independence as he could.
As many of you know, Jimmy has owned and been the sole employee for his landscaping and lawn service business for 30+ years. This job is one of long hours, intense heat, and using machines that in his condition, he is unable to do. His inability to work means he is unable to cover the cost of living expenses nor the large amount of medical expenses already incurred and are continuing to come his way. The stress and burden this is causing has left him under severe distress and has impacted his ability to seek the treatment he needs out of fear of not being able to afford it.
For those of you who know Jimmy personally, as more than just a coach, you know he is one of the most selfless people, who gives for others yet does not accept help. The positive impact he has had on many of our lives is undeniable. At this point, the man who constantly gives, is in need of our help.
