Chuck's Story
The past year couldn't have started out more promising for Watertown swim coach Chuck Baechler. He married Stephanie, the love of his life. He was named South Dakota Swim Coach of the Year for the second time. Two stepsons, a daughter-in-law and a fourth grandchild were invited into to his cherished family. A fifth grandchild is well on the way.
Then last month, a persistent sore throat became inflamed to the point of cutting off his airway altogether. After weeks of tests, the worst case scenario was confirmed. Chuck is literally in for the fight of his life against an aggressive form of throat cancer.
Over the course of the next seven weeks, Chuck will be forced to take a 180 mile roundtrip ride, five days a week, to Sioux Falls for chemotherapy treatments. Although insurance will help with some medical costs, any loss of income will quickly make day-to-day expenses challenging to impossible for Chuck and Stephanie. And of course there is a growing list of specialty items necessary for Chuck's continual in-home care.
If you know Chuck, you know that he is the first to drop everything and help when called upon. His caring nature and his humor are gifts he gives freely to family, friends and strangers alike. Gifts we all get to open again and again.
As his little brother and his biggest fan, I'll just go ahead and say what Chuck never could: It is time to give back to this good man who touches so many lives, young and old.
Again, it hardly needs to be said if you know him, but Chuck will be equally grateful for every offering of help, whether measured in dollars, gasoline, online shares, companionship or prayers.
Thank you in advance from Chuck, Stephanie, Jennifer, Monica, Derek, Jaylen, Aaron, and the entire Baechler family.
