Thomas Nbenei lives in the township of Masiphumele on South Africa's Western Cape. Growing up in a South African township is genuinely one of the harshest environments in the world. 48% of the population in Masi is under the age of 25, with an unemployment rate of 31%. Poverty, violence, and substance abuse significantly impact the community and create immense hurdles for youth trying to navigate their way to a better life. Thomas dedicates every day of his life to being a good role model to the kids in his community, giving them opportunities to participate in sports like soccer and surfing. Giving kids a positive outlet supports their progress in sports and school as well as their mental well-being. Thomas's goal is to continue to grow the program so it can impact as many young kids in Masi as possible.
