Coach Scott DeBerry’s Cancer Care Fund
Scott DeBerry, known as Debo to most people, became very ill in February. After months of tests, ER visits, and two lengthy hospital stays with no ideas for the cause of his suffering surgery was scheduled for June 4, 2021 to remove a section of colon that suddenly became swollen. An hour after surgery started, the surgeon paused surgery to call Scott’s wife, Melissa, to tell her that they found cancer. Stage IV Metastatic Gastric Adenocarcinoma to be exact. The diagnosis was a surprise to everyone because no test, including a full body PET scan, indicated cancer. They were all negative. Scott has been working hard every day since to get healthy enough to start chemotherapy or other alternative therapies. It’s been a struggle every day, but he battles his way through. Inspired by his courage and commitment, Debo’s family and friends are reaching out to everyone we know and seeking the generosity of strangers to help him and his family with this fight.
Scott is a teacher and head baseball coach for Laurel Highlands High School. He has coached baseball for 20 years total and has been Head Coach for the past 8 years. Over that time, he has been more than a coach to the players. He has been a mentor, a friend, and a teacher. Scott rebuilt the baseball program at LH and speaking for the many players who have reached out, the LH baseball experience would not be the same without him. Off of the field, Scott lives a beautiful happy life as a loving husband to his wife, Missy, a devoted father to his children Shaeleigh and Drew, and a doting grandfather to granddaughters Sidney and Charlotte. He is also a loving son to his father, Jerry. Scott’s mom passed away suddenly in January, his dad was diagnosed with Parkinson’s two weeks later and now Scott is fighting for his life. Stating it’s been a rough year for Scott and his family would be an understatement.
Despite having health insurance there are tests, medicines, procedures, copays, equipment, supplies, etc…that will not be covered and there’s the added expenses of travel. Scott’s family relies on his income exclusively. His wife is not employed and has now become his primary caregiver. The last hospital bill received was for the amount of $215,496.31 which did not include any claims paid. We’re hoping desperately to raise money to ease the financial burden this disease is putting on his family and to give Scott the comfort of knowing he & his family are not fighting alone.
Scott and his family would be forever grateful for any contribution you are able to provide to help in his fight.
