Coach Fletcher Salter is a husband, father, grandfather, godfather, educator, coach, mentor, and more than anything a man of God.
Fletcher Salter was born June 1, 1949 to Willie and Era Salter in Montgomery Alabama. At a very young age, Fletcher displayed a skill and love for all sports. He continued playing sports through semi-pro baseball before returning home to assist in caring for his mother. After moving to Atlanta as a young man, he met and married his bride, Edith Salter. The next 40 years of his life was filled with service, dedication, and a fight for life.
Service to God, Service to Community, and Dedication to Family/Friends.
Service to God: He was a member of the Mount Welcome Missionary Baptist church for over 30 years. He served as Deacon in the Church, advisor to the Pacers Ushers Board, a member of the Welcoming ministry, and was a charter team leader of the Crestview nursing home ministry.
Service to Community: He was a Coach and Educator at many schools and recreation centers for more than 30 years including Fairington Elementary, Tilson Elementary, Chapel Hill Middle School, McNair High School, Southwest DeKalb High School, Gresham Park, Redan Park, and Wade Walker Park.
Service to Family: He was the number one supporter of his family and friends. On any given weekend, after the football game, he could be seen in the airport flying to his grandson's basketball games in Maryland or in Decatur helping his son prepare the baseball field for an upcoming game.
Unbeknownst to most people, in 2002, he received a prostate cancer diagnosis. He underwent treatment and became a cancer survivor. In 2016, during a brief trip to his grandson's baseball game, we recognized a nodule in his leg. In 2017, he received a soft tissue sarcoma diagnosis. After numerous rounds of chemotheraphy, radiation, and surgery, he continued to speak life.
Twelve hours before he entered eternal rest, even with his body in a weakened state, he continued to ask about the well being and salvation of his closest family and friends. He verbalized the Lord was waiting on him, but he was determined to make sure we would all be okay. During one of the last conversations he had with his son, he requested the names of people to establish a football team. We'd like to think, he was establishing a team in heaven to play football and look over us.
