My name is Shelley Hershberger, I have been friends with Terri and Rick Underhill for over 30 years.

Today I am starting a GoFundMe on behalf of Rick and Terri Underhill.

In addition to monthly home mortgage, keep utilities on at home, pay for out of town lodging near Transplant Center, gasoline, toll road fees, daily parking, home repairs, including a water leak and invasive critter control, car maintenance with no financial compensation and no fundraisers to date. Also asking for all prayer warriors to join with us and lift Rick Underhills name up in prayer and ask for healing and health, as this family is in dire need of prayers and support at this time.

Rick Underhill wore many hats over the years; husband, dad, grandpa, and Coach Rick to many former SKRA Football players.

Rick worked at General Motors for many years doing a job he loved, but likely exposed him to conditions conducive to development of Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Rick received the diagnosis 14 years ago and typically 2-5 years is average life span with normal disease progression. There is no known cure.

Rick was determined to beat Pulmonary Fibrosis and began exploring Double Lung Transplant Surgery as an answer to this avid golfer's prayers.

Organ Donation, when successful, can lead to extended years. However, in Rick's case, numerous complications began early on; from receiving poor quality donor lungs, known to be antibiotic resistant infections(s).

Unfortunately since surgery that was performed in February, it appears that Rick has acquired these same infections, that he never had prior to transplant surgery.

In addition to invasive transplant surgery, Rick has suffered a stroke involving both sides of the Cerebellum, the brain structure of muscle memory, coordination and balance.

Rick has not been able to walk since the onset of the stroke.

Sadly, the repeated cycle of antibiotic resistant infections raging, Rick has also developed sepsis several times.

More recently in June, Rick experienced cardiac arrest.

With length of time since hospitalization, due to one complications after another. Rick and Terri, have been away from home now over seven months. Not only have they had to pay for lodging, gas, food, toll roads, etc, these expenses are in addition to their normal monthly living expenses. They have been out of town and away over 7 months. Traveling back and forth prior to hospitalization since October 2024.

Their home, which they are hoping to keep, is in need of repairs, upkeep and regular maintenance.

Though fully alert, Rick is still on a ventilator and unable to speak, unable to walk and receiving Hemodialysis 3-4 times per week.

The hospital is indicating a long stay. There has been no fundraisers or benefits to date for us.
