One thing I love about the Fairbanks community is that we come together with our big hearts to support those who have suddenly found themselves in an unexpected crisis. Folks, it’s time to come together again for a very special person whom a lot of you, especially in the hockey community, have known for decades as a tireless, motivated, hard-working, friendly member of our community and Fairbanks youth hockey coach.
Throughout the years, Coach John Garrity has dedicated his free time to not only teach our kids the sport of hockey, but most importantly, he has taught valuable life lessons that have helped mold our kids into smart, responsible, caring, accountable, friendly and hard-working adults. Pretty much a parents’ best friend!
Since his retirement from the Alaska Laborers’ Union Local 942, John has traded out his hockey gear for car seats and is now the best Papu (Grandpa). He is an ever-present grandparent to Madison and Monroe and devotes his time to teaching them about music, laughing with them and giving them his full attention. He consistently shows up to support them and is always there, loving them unconditionally.
Unfortunately, this past December, our friend John was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He underwent surgery in January to remove much of the cancer, but will require many months of radiation and other treatment in his fight against this terrible disease.
As you can imagine, the costs of treating any type of cancer are enormous and insurance only pays a portion of those medical bills. This Go Fund Me would be a way for us as a community to help ease the burden of John’s mounting medical bills and in a way, give back for the many ways he has touched our lives these past 40+ years.
As a hockey mom of three kids that John has coached throughout the years, I have seen first-hand how he loves this town and the people in it. Let’s show him how much we love him back and appreciate all he has done! Any amount you can contribute will be greatly appreciated. Please share to get the word out! Thank you!
