Coach Black's Second Half Comeback

Coach Julius Black knows the value of calling an audible. As a former football player and current middle school coach, he helps develop players’ ability to read situations and respond accordingly. Changing a plan last minute isn’t something to be done lightly, especially in the heat and pressure of a game. On-the-fly changes aren’t just contained to the four quarters of a football game, which is another concept Coach Black attempts to teach his athletes and his students as they experience all of the obstacles life (and middle school) throw their way. Often, he is students’ go-to “safe person” because of his natural ability to provide a caring ear and compassionate guidance. In some cases, he is the only adult trusted by students needing to have such “big talks” thanks to his ability to make our kids feel seen, heard, and safe. With each conversation, Coach Black offers ways for students to develop appropriate responses to dramatic change---something he’s learned from experience.
When he found out he would be a father, Coach Black was mid-way through his pursuit of a degree in education. Continuing his education meant his enrollment would limit ways to provide for his family financially. He was faced with a choice: continue college, or quit to secure financial stability for his new son. His choice should be no surprise; Coach Black took not just one but two full-time jobs to step up to his new responsibility. While challenging, one of these positions allowed him to become an essential member of the LCMS family. After a few years of acting as a part-time Coach and academic support (receiving part-time pay), he has decided on a new path that would secure the financial stability for himself and his family: becoming a certified educator. This audible doesn’t come without challenges. Unknown to Black, his former tuition (thought to be covered by scholarship) went to collections and now prevent him from executing his new game plan. $5,000 separate him from re-enrollment. He cannot do this alone, which is why we’re asking that you provide Julius the same level of support that he tirelessly offers our students every single day. By donating to this cause, you allow the role model of dozens to achieve his dream. Not only that, but you help show our students the power of second chances.

Whether it’s in his role as a coach or as a part of our academic support team, Coach Black never fails in going above and beyond he call of duty for students at Lake Cormorant Middle. LCMS students were asked about Coach Black, and here’s what they said:
“He’s like an older brother. He stays on me a lot, and you can talk to him about real stuff-just like a dad. When my brother died, he called me instantly and talked about life. He’s just a good person.”
-A.M.

Coach Black has done a lot for me. Last year he stayed after school every day to work out with us, he volunteered to show us workouts and give up his time after school. He’s like another dad to me because he’ll give me life advice, and he’s always checking up on students-other than athletes. Took me out for my birthday.”
-M.H.

In school, coach black helps me focus on my work and get my grades up. Out of school, if I need to get something done, he’ll help me do it. He’s celebrated me when my family wasn’t able to do that, and will basically do anything he can to help us.”

When I was in 6th grade, Coach Black helped me when there were boys bullying me. He has also been super nice!
-A.W.

Whenever I needed advice about anything, I go straight to Coach Black because he helps you with anything you need.
-M.A.
Coach Black always has a positive attitude, and he’s sweet to everyone. When I have a bad day, I know I can talk to him and he’ll make my day better.
-R.F.

He’s helped me change and grow in football, school and life. He’s been a coach, teacher and friend to me when I needed it.
T.C.
I’m a better wide receiver because of him, and he always lets me know I can be anything I want to be.
-T.Y.

He inspired me to stay in football and not give up on myself, he always pushes me to do and be better and it always helps.
-J.I.

Please consider donating to Coach Black’s cause. Every dollar of the $5,500 raised goes to allowing a truly inspirational role model and human being the ability to become a certified educator.
