On 02/17/2023 Zakary Walters had an unexpected and severe injury at work.
I, Robin, Zak’s fiancé received calls and texts from numerous people that he got into an accident at work and he broke both of his legs and would be transported to a hospital in another city.
While the details are all still a bit blurry as it’s only been two days, Zak had to be life flown to Walla Walla, Wa, where it was discovered, after running many tests/scans, he broke his Tibia and had numerous deep tissue gashes in several areas that went as far as exposing the muscle in his leg.
After the initial shock of the accident wore off, Zak was able to tell the team of doctors that the lower half of his body was crushed in an industrial wood processor.
He was prepped for surgery to asses damage of the broken Tibia. While in surgery, it was also discovered his CTA was abnormal and the radiologist thought Zak had a tear in two arteries. The surgical team quickly assessed the arterial damage and the decision was made to fly him to yet another hospital in Washington where they would be more equipped for vascular surgical care as they were worried about his blood clotting and causing complications with his heart.
Zak is still in the hospital with hardware holding the broken bone in place and plans have been made for another surgery this upcoming week in order to put permanent hardware (a metal rod or plate) into his leg. Long term and nerve/tissue damage is still to be determined, but it is likely he will have a permanent limp.
The trauma done to Zak’s body has been very stressful so he has to stay on oxygen as his lungs are not working at full capacity.
He is expected to stay in the hospital in Richland Washington, several hours away from his home in Wallowa County for approximately another week.
Zak is looking at a long road of recovery ahead of him, but he has not faltered. He is still the same humble, determined, and optimistic person he was before.
Zak is a father to 3 kids; Zayden, Colton, and Evelyn, and is the primary source of income for the household.
The extent of Zak’s injuries will likely leave him out of work for an unknown and extended period of time. This has been a very unexpected and scary experience for Zak and his loved ones.
He is in quite a bit of pain, but is smiling and feeling very thankful for his condition given the circumstances of the accident.
The Walters family is very thankful for any financial support as it helps ensure the basics are covered for the family for a short term of time while they work out the details of future finances.
Anything donated is very much appreciated. Thank you.
