Hi, my name is Vicky.

Recently, I visited my doctor due to severe inflammation and pain in my lower abdomen, as well as back pain. This led to an abdominal ultrasound, which revealed that I have four masses growing in my uterus. While these growths are non-cancerous, they have significantly reduced my quality of life over the past few months. The debilitating chronic pain and heavy bleeding have forced me to make a decision that might not be for everyone.

After discussing treatment options with my doctor, I decided that a total abdominal hysterectomy would be the best choice for me. Considering the location of the fibroids, the risk of developing more in the future, and my extremely painful cycles over the last few months, my doctor agreed with and supported my decision.

My surgery should be scheduled soon, and I am currently waiting to hear from my insurance regarding pre-authorization. I understand how insurance works, and I know I will have to meet my deductible of $3,300 before they cover any part of my surgery. Once they do start covering it, I will likely reach my out-of-pocket maximum.

The funds raised will help cover my deductible and some smaller non-housing-related bills while I am out of work. Due to physical limitations during my recovery, I won’t be able to return to my full-time job for a minimum of 4 to 6 weeks (no pay due to no short term disability benefits), according to my doctor.

I realize that this is a lot to ask, and I generally feel quite uncomfortable seeking support. However, the last few years have shown me how crucial community support and mutual aid are for low-income individuals and marginalized groups. I am learning to accept that I am allowed to ask for help and deserve support.

I feel hopeful for the future and excited to overcome my illness. I look forward to all the things I will be able to achieve once I am fully healed.
