RIP Clyde Barker

Clyde was experiencing senior dog medical problems in his elder years. In less than one year, the level 2 heart murmur he had when I adopted him progressed to a level 4 (out of 6). Chest X-rays revealed Cardiomegaly (an enlarged heart) and his vet suggested he get an echocardiograph to get a better look inside, but the primary health concern was the stage 6 canine kidney disease, which is end-stage kidney failure.

Subcutaneous fluids were recommended, and many people reached out to tell me how the subQ fluids helped their pets enjoy a good quality of life after being diagnosed with kidney disease.

However, Clyde's heart grew weaker and was not strong enough to pump blood properly, which made him weak and he had difficulty walking. Sometimes, his heart rate would speed up and cause him to breathe heavily as if he was running, even though he was lying still, especially at night.

That, coupled with the CKD, caused his health to decline rapidly within a matter of days. I knew he had unseen pain inside, and I didn't want him to suffer to what could have been the sudden death of kidney failure, a heart attack, or a slow painful death related to congestive heart failure.

On October 1, 2025, Clyde crossed over the Rainbow Bridge peacefully, surrounded by loved ones at his side along with Dr. Henry, the amazing veterinarian who cared for Clyde for most of his appointments at the Highland Park Animal Hospital for over 15 years.

I want to thank everyone who loved and helped Clyde's fundraisers in the past few years. There was one for a tooth extraction in 2020 for $500; a rhinoscopy/biopsy for a severe sinus infection in 2022 for $1500; and a Senior Dog Fund in 2024 that raised $583. This will be his 4th and final GoFundMe to help cover the costs of his euthanasia and cremation.
