Our Story
We have the opportunity to take the five 2015 High School Graduates from Clyde River on the trip of a lifetime to Paris, Canterbury, Normandy, Saint-Malo, and London! Clyde River, Nunavut, is a small, remote Inuit hamlet on northern Baffin Island where Inuktitut is the first language. The people here are very generous with what little they have, but with a population of less than 1000, the fundraising possibilities within the community are limited. So we are reaching out to ask for help from you!
These five students have worked hard every single day not only to achieve their academic success, but to rise above the hardships of living here. They have beat the odds in a town with high rates of alcoholism, domestic violence, and school absenteeism. Despite the negative struggles, there is also a rich cultural pride rooted in deep traditional values and activities. Most of these students have never seen a tree in real life (we live above the treeline!), but all have been dog-sledding and learned how to make igloos.
As they near their graduation from high school, they are faced with decisions and possibilities for the next step. We want to give them some amazing educational travel experiences to show them a world beyond Clyde River. To open their eyes to new and exciting adventures while grounding them in their own identities. A trip like this will not only enrich their personal growth, but also inspire them to become valued, contributing members of their own communities when they return. It will benefit them and those around them, and inspire future students to stay in school, work hard, achieve success, and find their place locally, nationally, and even internationally.
Thank you for your time, consideration, and generosity.
Sincerely,
Heather McIsaac and Ashley Howie
