For the last six years we have built with your help a Vegan restaurant we believed South Florida needed. We are so grateful for the community that we served who helped us every day to complete our mission of helping animals by making great vegan comfort food. We hope you loved it too. Your help and support has been integral to us since day one, and in our last days we ask for your help again.
While Clovermint was intrinsically rewarding beyond measure, it was not always financially rewarding. The last six years have seen little to no income at times and while we happily took the hit to our savings and lifestyle for the higher good, it has left us in a jam come the end. We had hoped to recover the personal finances we invested and gone without over the years through an eventual sale (or break through in business over time!).
After a slow end to last year, 2020 was shaping up to be our best year ever until COVID-19 hit. Things quickly changed and without your support and funding from the SBA, we would've reached this point of closing much sooner. We had negotiated with our landlord in March to shrink our space come our lease renewal this summer so that we could continue operations through uncertain times.
About two weeks ago, the plug was pulled on that very suddenly and our plan to save our business dissolved before our very eyes. Devastated, we began to work quickly to find a buyer for the business who had the capacity to sustain it financially so that it could live on but as weeks wore on that began to seem more and more unrealistic due to the current state of Coronavirus. We even tapped friends, family, and customers who might be interested but it just got too close to the ending of our lease to complete a sale and we risked walking away with nothing at all if we couldn't get in under the wire.
At the moment our only option to recover our loses is to liquidate our equipment for pennies on the dollar. At best we are looking at 2% of what we invested over the years out of our own pockets. Without going into the nitty gritty, Ann invested all of the settlement she received for a severe car accident she was in years prior that shattered her pelvis and put her in a wheelchair, leaving her with continuing health issues. And her parents invested from their retirement funds to help us open and stay afloat. We are all walking away with deep losses.
At this point, we accept those decisions we made and what's done is done but without the sale of the business we are finding ourselves at a disadvantage for getting back on our feet and continuing on with our lives. We are facing a very sudden loss of income that will extend into the weeks and months after we close while we are getting things situated and then looking for employment. And we've decided the best thing we can do at this juncture to help ourselves move on emotionally and financially is start over new in a new place.
We are coming to our community who has always been our champion in times of need, one last time, with ways they can help, if they felt so compelled.
1. Be You- You are awesome
2. Eat one less animal meal a week than you currently do, in our absence
3. Order a Take out meal from Clovermint before our last day, July 5th
4. Buy a T-shirt while you're there
5. Donate here
6. Share our situation with anyone who might be able to help- whether it be through donation, inspiration, or potential job or housing opportunities (We are moving to Portland, OR and looking for COVID-proof industries to help us stabilize).
Any and all funds we receive will be used to help offset the costs of closing, sustain us while we are closing down and in between jobs, and help us start over come the end of the summer when we start our trek out West, just two wild-eyed kids and our 5 cat-children in tow. If there is any excess we will happily donate it and announce where we made the donation.
We do not ask for assistance lightly and yet we wanted to give our community the chance to respond in our time of need. Clovermint was a gorgeous experiment that brought us the highest highs and lowest lows, each of which expanding our capacities for harmony as members of this living planet. We plan to continue to pay that forward all of our lives. Every time, you've rushed forth to meet us with your collective, supporting hands, you've shown us better how to do that.
And for that we are eternally grateful.
