The New World Community is a small Canadian social enterprise dedicated to sustainably empowering those who need it the most. We are a group of student volunteers at the University of Toronto who have partnered with the NWC’s nonprofit arm – CLOUD (Changing Lives through Opportunities and Unified Dreams) Projects. CLOUD Projects connects student groups directly to local nonprofit organizations in partner communities in Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Kenya to implement housing, education, and sanitation projects. Here’s what makes CLOUD Projects stand out:
· The NWC works directly with organizations in partner communities to ensure projects are chosen and prioritized by community members themselves
· The NWC arranges for student teams to travel to partner communities to live with community members and work for local foremen to make the projects come alive
· 100% of the funds raised by the student team go directly towards their project, and they must pay for 100% of their own trip cost separately (0% overhead costs)
U of T’s team of 12 dedicated volunteers will be travelling to the developing community of Nuevo Renacer, Dominican Republic over reading week (February 13-20), located just minutes away from the beautiful resort beaches of Puerto Plata. Sprawling tourism development in the Puerto Plata region left extremely limited space and resources for Nuevo Renacer. They were forced to re-develop within a small valley, which stripped them of basic needs like safe housing and sanitary conditions, including a lack of access to clean water. The community erected hundreds of unsafe makeshift structures in which many families live today. The NWC has partnered with the Jardin de Luz Foundation – a grassroots community-based foundation run by an incredible woman named Sandra. Along with community leaders, Sandra has identified a housing project as the greatest need for us. Our fundraising goal for this project is $5000, and we need YOUR help!
100% of your donation will go directly towards the materials needed for this project, and the sustainable development of the community of Nuevo Renacer. Again, student volunteers will be funding the full cost of our own journey, and are requesting your kind support in achieving our fundraising goal for housing development through this truly unique form of international partnership.
