Sad faces, happy faces, lonely faces, empty spaces. These are the faces I was forced to leave behind after Typhoon Haiyan, this past summer during my Integrated Community Development trip to the Philippines - a Global Health Master of Public Health Research course. These faces, among certain smells, sounds, and images, have been seared into my mind - I will never forget them. I could write about all of the beauty, and positive things that I experienced while there, but that would be a mischaracterization of what took place. That to which I was exposed, was the reality of the world in which we live; North America is a dream, a surreal illusion, in stark contrast to the existence and experiences that many in resource-limited countries face. I am disturbed as I reflect upon the conditions to which I was subject – for only three short weeks. This trip has deepened my understanding of why God has placed such a profound burden on my heart for medical missions.
As mentioned, I am a current graduate student at Loma Linda University (LLU), and have two quarters left to finish my program. I also aspire to attend medical school. However, in order to commence a medical program, I must first complete my MPH. I came to LLU under miraculous circumstances, and have seen how God has led me from the beginning. Still, I am responsible for being humble and reaching out in times of need.
Being an international student, with no support, presents unique challenges: the financing of one’s education among them. I have carried a balance above $25,000 for the last several quarters of graduate school, and currently have a balance that I am responsible for paying in the next 4 weeks - in addition to living expenses, and a private loan that is required to be paid monthly. I was not able to register for winter quarter, and I am now attempting to finish my program this summer. I have received scholarships from organizations in the past, but it seems that my well has run dry, and I am somewhat concerned about what my immediate future holds. Thus, I am reaching out for support with the full intention of paying it forward.
I am eager to do what I believe God created me for, and to continue to live according to His will for my life; my trip to the Philippines confirmed this. I am keen to help ameliorate the health of others, and believe that my sanguine, tenacious, compassionate nature will be a good fit for a future in healthcare. Please afford me the opportunity to finish my program this summer, and to help close the empty spaces that are the result of a dying world.
I would happy to provide letters of reference as well as current transcripts, in the event that you feel led to support me in reaching my goals.
Thank you for your consideration,
Monique P.
