Climbing Vines

Since 2014, Climbing Vines has existed to amplify the voices of UPENN black alumnae and undergraduate women. Our mission remains true today—to encourage discussion that promotes the mental health of, and progressive academic and social experiences for black undergraduate women at Penn, and beyond.

Why We Started This Fundraiser

The fall of 2019 marked the five-year anniversary of the project. To celebrate the anniversary we had planned to publish the second edition of Climbing Vines:  A Collection of Short Stories in print & ebook format. The second edition includes 17 short stories contributed to the first edition by Penn black women focused on their real experiences during the undergraduate years, as well as three new stories from new contributors.  Additionally we would simultaneously launch the Climbing Vines Podcast—a five-episode series featuring discussion about the black student experience with current undergraduate women and alumna.

Although we were able to execute the podcast using our own personal funds, we were not able to print the collection because the project did not get the anticipated funds needed to cover the printing costs.

We don't want to wait any longer to make this project a reality, so we are taking this into our own hands.

With your support we will:

- Print the second edition of Climbing Vines: A Collection of Short Stories
The more we raise, the more copies of the book we can print. We would like to provide  free print copies of the book for incoming and current black undergraduate women,  and donors.*

- Cover the costs of hosting the first and, hopefully second, season of the podcast on SoundCloud
This is an ongoing monthly cost that is being paid out of personal funds.

- Provide thank you gifts for our contributors
It takes time & great courage for these women to share their stories in written and audio format, without any expectation of receiving anything in return. We would like to provide small tokens of appreciation (ex. copies of the book & CV t-shirts) to our participants.

- Provide monetary compensation for our designer & copywriter
Our project looks to work with all Penn black women to produce our projects.

- Run a small-scale digital advertising campaign for the project to attract listeners for the podcast & spark interest in the book

- Cover the cost of website hosting & domain renewal
This is an ongoing annual cost that is being paid out of personal funds.

The more we are able to raise, the more we can do. This is a nonprofit project; all of the money raised will go toward pushing this project forward and ensuring the book, and podcast series remain available for years to come.

Thank you for your consideration and support!
