Climbing Kilimanjaro for Ukraine Relief

Hello, I am Ileene (12), and my brother is Neil (9). We are from New Jersey, USA, and plan to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for those affected by the war in Ukraine.

When we first heard our parents talking about the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, we were deeply saddened. As we read more about the crisis, we are very sad at the devastation.

We felt helpless, not knowing what we could do from 5,000 miles away to serve those in need. As we discussed options with our parents to help, we concluded that one way to make an impact was to raise funds by striving to accomplish an extraordinary challenge. We were planning a trip to Africa over the summer for a Safari. In our research, we learned about Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the world, towering at 19,341 ft.

Given our family's love for hiking, an impossible thought entered our minds: What if we climbed Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for Ukraine? Our parents always taught us that nothing was impossible, and in that spirit, they began doing research and contacting local Kilimanjaro guides. After learning that very few children had ever achieved this feat, we felt empowered. Though this climb will require us to be on the mountain for seven days, facing extreme altitude, brutally cold temperatures, and a 13-hour final day summit climb, we feel this is a unique opportunity. While we are very nervous, we are equally excited and motivated.
