Climb Salone is Sierra Leone’s (and West Africa’s) first and only indoor climbing wall! Established in 2017, it has introduced Sierra Leoneans to the fun and physical challenges of bouldering. Matthew Turay (Founding Partner and Head Setter) and his team have managed to build a fantastic climbing wall, including slabs, 10, 20 and 40-degree overhangs, a roof, and an introductory wall for local kids. And he has done this despite all the logistical, organisational, and environmental challenges West Africa can throw at a person.
Climb Salone now welcomes a huge range of Freetown locals to its walls: some of whom show great promise and amazing strength! Matthew offers Sierra Leoneans highly discounted entry fees to help provide an accessible and affordable route to climbing, in one of the world’s poorest countries. And thanks to this approach Freetown can now proudly boast at least a few V7 climbers!
Matthew is hoping to support more and more Sierra Leoneans to discover the joys of bouldering by raising £2000 towards rental costs. If successful, he can offer climbing free of charge to all Sierra Leoneans. All funds raised will go towards keeping Climb Salone’s doors open as wide as possible to West Africa’s next generation of climbers!
