When you live in one of the most isolated and remote places on the planet everything you do is determined by nature.

Climate change has now reached a level in Qaanaaq Greenland that the sea ice is too fragile for the families to safely go out to hunt. It should be minus 20 degrees centigrade now, some days it is as warm as zero degrees centigrade. There has already been one fatal disaster of a hunter and all his dogs falling through the ice and into the freezing Arctic ocean. It is also the long polar night, complete darkness.

No road or railway connects Qaanaaq. Small planes can land when the weather permits. There are only two deliveries of food per year by cargo ship. Until recently Qaanaaq was a cash less society, nature provided all they needed to survive and thrive. Due to climate change this is disappearing fast - their world is melting four times faster than anywhere else.

I have been a frontline humanitarian for two decades helping communities with long term economic recovery after natural catastrophic disasters such as earthquakes, tsunami and typhoons. I have had the honour of living and working with the families in Qaanaaq Greenland, some of the most resilient, kind and caring people I have ever met.
