Dear friends,
We're Andy & Tina Smerek, and we have BIG dreams to positively impact the world! We started local by creating Clementine Curbside to offer amazing compost services to communities with limited or no composting options. However - it is hard to write this - but in order for Clementine to continue, we need your help. Eight major items have broken on our truck in the last two months, which (along with needing to rent additional equipment), drained the savings we set aside for a new truck.
Clementine started in 2021, and in the 1st year, our customers diverted an incredible 131,850 pounds of material away from the landfill - that's a Boeing 737 airliner! We're excited and blessed to see our customer base continue to grow & our diversion numbers steadily climb, but our hauling truck (Ruby) has been quickly failing.
Ruby is a cute little Isuzu gal "born" in 2006, and she's been a trooper. But she's getting tired with several of her major systems failing in the last two months, so we need to retire her for a more reliable and efficient truck.
Our situation today: Ruby's five unexpected mechanic visits and repairs over the last two months depleted our saved-up funds we had allocated for a new truck. With a failing truck and no clear path to obtain a new one, we thought this was the end of Clementine.
BUT - when we notified our wonderful customers that we had to sadly end collection services, they rose up in support of Clementine! They asked how they could contribute and get us back on our feet. So here we are!
Andy & I have identified a new truck we can quickly get our hands on, and we secured a HELOC on our family home to cover the base cost of the new truck ($131,300). But it isn't enough to cover taxes and other required items. So we're asking for help to get through this rough patch so that we can continue to serve you, and here is how different tiers of funds will be used to set Clementine up for success:
* Minimum needed: $20,000
- Covers taxes, registration, shipping & prep for the new truck
* Stable-ground route: $28,000
- Above PLUS emergency fund & ability to solidify fall leaf & Christmas tree collection programs
* Sustainable route: $35,000
- Above PLUS 150 new compost carts (completely covers truck loan, insurance, & maintenance) & ability to solidify spring/fall compost give-back programs
* Pave the way for Growth: $40,000
- Above PLUS new carts to launch Broomfield curbside services
Andy and I are obsessed with creating an unrivalled composting experience and sustainable systems that will impact our children's futures for years to come. This truck will not only help us continue super-reliable service for our current customers, but it will set Clementine up for continued growth to expand our positive impact in the community.
For example, Clementine will be able to grow our customer base & easily schedule more routes - quadrupling our existing compost capacity over the next year. This would mean over 800,000 pounds per year diverted from landfills from this one new truck!
There are many new, never-tried-before things we want to introduce to your composting experience - maybe even full waste services in the future?! This fund will put us in a position to reliably carry on services, confidently look towards the future, and allow us to serve you in the best ways possible!
