CAMPAIGN FOR DYLAN WILKINSON VISUAL TECHNOLOGY
Our son, Dylan, was born  with extensive medical issues. Within his first 3 years, he had 3 surgeries-one sub total pancreatectomy and 2 surgeries to uncross severly crossed eyes. As he grew, Dylan's body became less apt to make insulin and he became an insulin dependent diabetic. There were some days his body responded to the drug but many others that it did not. Over the course of 27 years, the diabetes became  more insulin resistant and in fall of 2014,  Dylan went into congestive heart failure, full kidney failure and lost his vision, all within 3 months due to diabetes.  He had been working full time and going to college part time but now could no longer drive, live alone, cook, etc.. and was hooked up to a dialysis machine overnight, every night. He was still hopeful that he could get a kidney transplant and return to a somewhat "normal" life.  His  younger brother, Justin, lost his battle with the same disease in 2016 but then, miraculously and unfotunately,  through the loss of a young man named Zach, Dylan got a phone call that made his life change for the better! He was getting a new kidney...and pancreas!  The surgery went well and the kidney and pancreas starting working immediately.  For the past year, Dylan has faced many life threatening infections, as his body is working with new medications not to reject the 2 new organs. He is now stable and ready to move forward with his original life plan of going to college.  Although his occupational goal has changed from IT to medicine, this dream is very much alive. Dylan has been researching new technology to help him in his day to day living to learn life skills and  living independently as a blind man. He sees no light, and lives completely in the dark. Through his research, he has found a device called "Orcam 2" that clips onto his glasses and will read to him with a small speaker near his ear! It will allow Dylan to read(in full) his text books, menus, product labels-anything! It also has face recognition so when someone he knows is coming towards him, it tells him who is approaching and allows him to respond accordingly. (Example: "Mom is walking towards you" " A man wearing a blue coat is walking to your right"). It also tells him full color spectrum, allowing him to match socks while doing laundry and putting together his clothing outfits for the day. It also tells him time and some other life skills that we sighted people take for granted.  This is a life changing device!  Dylan lives on a very modest income and as you can imagine, a lot of his (and the family's) money is spent on his continued care and necessary medical needs. Although we are slowly raising money to get him this device, we are reaching out to everyone who ever asked us "how can I help" to please donate to this very worthy cause. We thank you in advance for any help you can offer and for sharing Dylan's story everywhere.  His goal is to become an endocrinologist so that he can help other people like him, but with an insiders point of view! We would love for him to be able to "see" in 2019 so we appreciate your donation today!
*Philip is set up as beneficiary of this campaign but strictly as Dylan's Power of Attorney. All funding received will be used to purchase technology to aid Dylan in gaining independence, beginning with the Orcam 2 visual aid. You can read about it here:
