Help Bring Clean Water and Hope to Mwenye Village, Malawi

What We’re Raising Funds For

We are raising funds to install a deep solar powered borehole for:
  • Safe, clean drinking water
  • Improving hygiene and sanitisation
  • Irrigation to support year-round farming
  • Community independence

Once installed, a dedicated team of agricultural experts — who worked with the village last year — has committed to continuing their visits over the next two years, helping families adapt to new, climate-resilient agricultural practices.

Mwenye is a remote village in the rural south of Malawi, far off the tarmac and only accessible by off-road vehicle. From November 2023 to July 2024, I had the privilege of living and working closely with the community — learning about their culture, values, and daily realities. My goal was simple: to listen, to understand their needs as they saw them, and to work with them to build long-term resilience from within.

But the situation in Mwenye is critical.

Over 750 people — most of them children — depend on a shallow, hand-dug well for drinking water. It is contaminated with pesticides and runoff from nearby fields, leading to widespread illness and chronic hunger. Many homes were destroyed by Cyclone Freddy in 2023, and families are still living in makeshift shelters.

Daily life in Mwenye is defined by scarcity. Families survive on a porridge made from wild grass seed, often eating only once every two days. Children rarely attend school, and when they do, they’re too hungry or weak to focus. With no stable source of income, some mothers make the desperate journey — two days on foot — to Mozambique in search of illegal labor. Others are forced into survival sex work.

This crisis is not inevitable. It is solvable. And it starts with water.

If families could access clean drinking water and irrigate their crops, they could feed their children, attend school, stay healthy, and reclaim their dignity. Water is not just a basic need in Mwenye — it is the key to everything.

In July, I was unexpectedly hospitalised in the UK and had to step away from the work. But I haven’t forgotten Mwenye, and I’m committed to completing at least one small part of our shared vision: access to water.
