My name is Kyle Cheung and I am a junior in High School. In my summer of 2018 I traveled throughout Asia and stopped in Bali, Indonesia to volunteer and provide humanitarian aid. I've never experienced an earthquake before. However, that changed during my stay in Bali. On August 5, the destructive earthquake measuring 7.0 hit Lombok, a neighboring island to Bali. The epicenter at North Lombok Regency experienced several quakes the weeks ahead and its aftershocks were scary. Being in the island next to Lombok, I saw the havoc an earthquake can do to society. Hearing the devastation at Lombok and making close bonds with the Indonesian locals and new friends, I desired to help. Upon my return to the US, I heard the extent of the quakes at Lombok and the continued suffering, devastation and impact which lead to at least 500 people dead and 400,000 still homeless. Experiencing Indonesian society firsthand, I have understood that their contaminated water has resulted in many in desperate need for clean water and the recent earthquake has only made conditions worse. With water being a necessity for all of life, I seek to start a donation and use the money to purchase portable military grade water filters straws for the earthquake victims. With clean water very scarce, distributing these water filters will give these victims access to drinkable water.
