My name is Desmond Powers, and I am 40 years old, and I was born November 2, 1984. I was born and raised in Prince William County Virginia in Woodbridge, Virginia living in apartment with my family. I attend public school there and then my parents placed me in private school through my church. We have always been involved in the church all my life joining different units to now only doing the healthcare ministry. We attend private school until middle school and my parents moved us all to Stafford County, Virginia we’re I attend middle and high school there. While attending high school I worked while maintaining good grades and joined the local volunteer rescue squad where they trained me to be an Emergency Medical Technician. After, high school I was hired by Lifecare Medical Transports to work two 24 hours shift a week on the Advanced Life Support (ALS) unit medic truck. While working at Lifecare I also worked 12-hour shifts night shift at Prince William Hospital in the Emergency Room and Pediatric Emergency Room. After, three years I resigned from Lifecare & Prince William Hospital I was hired at Reston Hospital Center an HCA hospital to work 12-hour night shifts in the Emergency Department, ICU & float pool mean I worked every floor in the hospital. I worked at Reston Hospital center for two years then I went back and was hired at Lifecare Medical Transport to work 12-hour night shift on the Medic unit. I worked on the medic unit for about a year and then my mom took sick and I resigned from Lifecare to help my dad take care of her because he was a truck driver and really did not know what to do like I would, so I took over my mom’s care. While taking care of my mom I picked up and was hire part time at FlexRN to work a travel assignment as a Paramedic at the Smithsonian Fork Life festival I was also attending college at Laurel Ridge Community College to become an RN. I worked the festival with a Registered Nurse as my partner for a year and then I resigned because mom had gotten sicker and was now confined in a hospital bed. My mom also hired me to be her caregiver, and I did that for about two years, and my dad got sick, and I had to place him in a nursing home because I could not take care of two people alone. While dad was on the sick bed, I had to cover all the cost of everything and my income was not enough and we were facing eviction, and we did get evicted. While trying to find a new place my dad was also being transported to a closer nursing home so he would be close to his family. This all happened in September 2022, and my dad never made it because it passed away during transport. That was the worst day of my life because I been around my father closely for 39 years and I had to do everything because mom was in a hospital bed. Then I had to come back home to tell his wife my mother that he passed away. After, his funeral we moved in with my sister and then that’s when us of the blue I became sick because while taking care of my parent I forgot about my well being. So, I was rushed to the Emergency Department at Stafford Hospital Center where they told me that I was in Acute Renal Failure, and they need to place a Emergency catheter for Dialysis. That happened November 10, 2022, and then I was rushed to the trauma center at Mary Washington Hospital because I had problems with my heart. I have a bad right triceps valve, and I need to see a cardiac surgeon, so they admitted me in the hospital for 10 days. While in the hospital that’s when I found out that my right big toe was infected to the bone and they had to do surgery to remove the toe. After, surgery I was transferred to Encompass Rehab Hospital for rehabilitation and after two weeks I was discharged home. I went back to my sisters' house where we all were and then my sister got herself evicted and when I tried to help I could not because the balance was too high, so we had to move. We did not find a place we moved around to different hotels yes while also having my mom transported by ambulance each time. While moving around myself and my mom still had to go to Davita Dialysis Center three days a week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and then mom got really sick again and we decided that it was time to place her in a nursing home until we find a home big enough to bring her back home with an aide. While staying in a hotel I still go to receive treatment for dialysis the regular three days I am finally at goal after almost three years, and I feel good. My goal is to finish school while trying to finish the steps to be placed on the kidney transplant list. I am going to try and to enroll in school for the Fall 2025 semester because I have to do something to move forward and when I receive my kidney, I will be a Registered Nurse (RN), the Certified Nurse Anesthesiologist (CRNA). After, going to practice in the field and bedside but most of all the operating room and while doing that I would like to also consider going on to become a Nurse Practitioner (NP) and maybe one day open up my own urgent care or Doctor’s office. I know that it’s tough out here for everyone and everyone is going through something. But if you can help I would greatly appreciate it. The reason for this is to find safe environment and not infested with roach. I don’t was to reject my kidney when it time if I’m still in this hotel. I would move but this is all my funds can afford and with paying that it does not leave enough for me to get food and other things. But I just keep the faith because I know my God has got my back and I know he will provide all my needs. So, if you can help me reach my goal I will be forever grateful and if I can pay it forward I will. I know some my say to check with my local agency for help and support and I know this and tried them all and the only place willing to help me is the hotel I am staying at now. So, please help me find my forever home because I want to live and get my kidney transplant and keep it and I clam this in the mighty name of Jesus. I will be coming on to post updates everyday and on dialysis days come on this journey with me to meet my goal. Plus, I have to keep going in the memory of my father because I have to stay and look after my mom and my nieces and nephews plus if I don’t take care of me I can’t take care of them. I pray that you all will look into your heart to help me. All my life I was in the fire and rescue service and I have always had a job and worked and I had to leave the work force to take care of my parents. It’s has not always been good some people tried to kick me down but the people who know me know the person I am and my character shows for it self. So, for those that are still my friend and in my corner I want to say thank you I appreciate you and when I get this kidney we going on a well deserved trip. God Bless you all!!
