Help bring Clayton home/treatments

Hi everyone,
We just wanted to give an update on Clayton.

May 15th marked 1 year since his accident happened. He has made tremendous progress since then. May 15th changed life as we knew it.

The week that followed his accident was full of enormous ups and downs and no one was quite sure what the outcome would be. Clayton has been able to prove all of his doctors wrong with just how strong he is.

By the grace of god and the power of prayer and love he has made it through and progressed in time. Initially from the accident he suffered many injuries like a fracture in his C7, fractured ribs, a collapsed lung, internal bleeding from a raptured spleen, torn and strained ACL and MCL in both knees and last but certainly not least, a traumatic brain injury. Clayton suffers from a Diffuse Axonal Injury. That means his brain went through traumatic acceleration/deceleration during his accident. In doing so this created extensive lesions in the grey and white matter of his brain. Meaning his brain contains millions of neurons and axons that were sheared and torn. Although there are up and downs during every recovery Clayton ended up having pneumonia 4 times as well as having his Gtube get clogged and pulled out on numerous occasions and an episode of small seizures; Clayton has pushed through this debilitating TBI and has made tons of progress. He has been off the ventilator and breathing 100% on his own for over 6 months. In April he was decanulated (which means the tube in his trachea was removed) so that hole in his throat could close since he breathes on his own. But we've yet to reach the next stage in his recovery.
Clayton hasn't quite reached the fully cognitive state. He has minimal amounts of consciousness and has yet to respond to command which is a major part in his recovery. Not being able to respond to command hinders him from reaching the next level in recovery like extensive physical therapy, speech therapy, etc. Cognition is the ultimate goal we're striving for so we can move forward and get Clayton back to being himself- the one you all know and love.

We have recently discovered Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) and learned that it has been extremely successful in treating people who suffer from Traumatic Brain Injury. In many cases it have improved fine and gross motor skills, speech, thinking (cognition), memory, physical healing, etc.

How does hyperbaric oxygen help brain injury or stroke?

When cells in the brain die, either from trauma or lack of oxygen, blood plasma leaks out into surrounding brain tissue causing swelling and reducing blood flow. These otherwise normal cells go dormant because they can't function without the appropriate amount of oxygen. HBOT dramatically increases the oxygen carried in the blood plasma, making oxygen available to heal damaged capillary walls, preventing plasma leakage and reducing swelling. As the swelling decreases, blood flow can be restored to the dormant tissue (neovascularization) and these cells then have the potential to function again.

Unfortunately these treatments are not covered through Claytons insurance.

We cannot thank you enough for donating and sharing Claytons gofundme when his accident happened. It was shared over 18,000 times!! We are so extremely grateful for the money that was raised but that money has been used up for months now.

The treatment only costs about $150-$350 each time but Clayton will need about 40 treatments to make a significant difference. We will also need to pay for transportation each time.

We want to give Clayton the best chance we can at improving his quality of life and hopefully bringing him home in the near future. November 30th will be Clayton's 30th birthday and from what we've read- this treatment could be one of the most important gifts he'll ever receive.

We will be forever grateful for any and all help.

Thank you for continuing to help Clayton in his recovery.

It means more to us than any of you will ever know.
